Welcoming Perspective...shifting your paradigms

By lil omm , 1:56 PM

One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?”

“It was great, Dad.”
“Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked.
“Oh yeah,” said the son.
“So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?”, asked the father

The son answered:

“I saw that we have one dog and they had four.
We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end.
We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night.
Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.
We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight.
We have servants who serve us, but they serve others.
We buy our food, but they grow theirs.
We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.”
The boy’s father was speechless. Then his son added…

“Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.”

Save the D.C. Healthy Schools Act!

By lil omm , In , 7:43 PM

Read on to learn more about this important bill and how you can sign the petition to show your support.

Last year, the DC Health Department found that 43% of students enrolled in city public schools were overweight or obese — one of the highest rates in the nation. On May 4, the DC City Council unanimously passed a groundbreaking piece of legislation called the ‘DC Healthy Schools Act’ to fight this problem. The Act raises nutritional standards, brings fresh, local fruits and vegetables to schools, triples the amount of physical and health education, creates school gardens, and expands school-based health and wellness programs.

The D.C. Healthy Schools Act is a landmark bill that will:

* substantially improve health, wellness, and nutrition in our schools
* raise the nutritional standards and improve the quality of school meals
* bring more fresh, local fruits and vegetables to schools
* triple the amount of and vegetables to schools
* triple the amount of physical and health education by adopting national standards
* create school gardens and support other environmental initiatives
* expand school-based health and wellness programs
* Ensure that low-income students have access to a nutritious breakfast every day

Despite these incredible efforts to grow healthy children, the corporate lobby is fighting to stop this initiative. Coke, Pepsico and Dr. Pepper-Snapple and their super-sized lobby firm the American Beverage Association (ABA) are fighting the means to fund this bill: an additional penny-per-ounce of soda dedicated to healthy schools. ABA has already spent $5.4 million nationwide this year on expensive advertising and backdoor lobbying gimmicks. That’s why we need your help!

The proposed D.C. Healthy Schools Revenue Act would fund this initiative by:

* adding a one-cent-per-ounce tax to sugar-sweetened beverages to fight obesity
* the tax WOULD NOT include diet soda, non-caloric beverages, juices, milk, and water
* the soda tax would be imposed on distributors - NOT our small, local businesses. It would not apply to concentrated syrup, which is primarily sold to restaurants and bars

If you support this bill, sign the petition and share the link with friends! Every signature counts.

Interested in how you can incorporate yoga into your family's life off the mat? This event fits perfectly with lil omm's mission. HMN is a great organization. Check it out and learn more about other HMN activities!

What: Holistic Moms DC June 2010 Meeting
When: Tuesday, June 1, 6:30-8:30 pm
Topic: Ayurveda for the Family

On Tuesday, June 1, the DC Chapter of the Holistic Moms Network will welcome Anne Thiel, Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultant, who will teach us how to incorporate the healing science of Ayurveda into the care of our families.

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian healing science that is often considered the “sister science” of yoga. It was developed by “rishis” (seers) through observing the world and human beings around us. Also coined “medicine of nature”, at its core, Ayurveda seeks to teach us how to live in harmony with nature, with its cyclical rhythm, but also with the way nature’s energies manifest in us. Ayurveda captures this manifestation of energies and how it plays out in human beings in the concept of doshas, or constitutional body types. Understanding yours and your child’s body types can go a long way toward preventing illness and furthering health and even happiness. In this session, Anne will discuss the basic tenets of Ayurveda and the three main forms of constitutional body types. She will teach us how to determine our and our childrens’ body types, imbalances that are likely to occur for each type, and how we can be proactive about preventing them.

Anne Thiel is an Ayurvedic lifestyle consultant. She was first formally introduced to Ayurveda in an Ayurveda/Thai Yoga training in 2005 and completed Kripalu’s School of Ayurveda program in 2007. Anne is passionate about the wisdom of this ancient Indian healing science and seeks to help clients identify lifestyle changes that allow them to find more balance and harmony in their lives. Anne has been offering workshops in the DC area for the past few years and also works with clients on a one-to-one basis.

Our "Ayurveda for the Family" meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 1, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Cleveland Park Public Library, 3310 Connecticut Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20008. Taking Intentions Further

By lil omm , In , 1:47 PM

Here's something I read today that make me think about intention. Not just on the yoga mat - but in life, with family, as parents, and even how we approach the small things that take us off-course throughout the day.

Yoga allows us to take time to look to ourselves, and look inward. This reading reminds us that while a big-idea intention is so important ("patience","grace", "openess"), it is also important for us to think about how that translates into each interaction we have, in every situation.

We Are the Decisive Element

I have come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element.
It is my personal approach that creates the climate.
It is my daily mood that makes the weather.
I possess tremendous power to make life miserable or joyous.
I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration.
I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal.
In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis is escalated or de-escalated, and a person is humanized or dehumanized.
If we treat someone as the limited person they think they are, we support their sense of limitation.
If we treat people as who they could be, we help them become all that they are capable of becoming.

-Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
